Lisa Fields, MSN, RN, CNS, BC
My name is Lisa Fields and I am nationally board certified by the American Nurses Credentialing Center as a Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) in Psychiatric Mental Health Nursing since 2001. I am a registered nurse licensed in North Carolina since 1991 and recognized by the NC Board of Nursing as a CNS since 2001. I completed my Associate Degree in Nursing with Honors at VGCC in 1991, then completed my Bachelor's Degree in Nursing with Distinction at UNC Chapel Hill in 1996, and completed my Master's Degree in Psychiatric Mental Health Nursing at UNC Chapel Hill in 2000. Since 1991 I have worked in the mental health field as a nurse, Since 2001 I have worked as a nurse psychotherapist or counselor and am paneled with several insurance providers.
My practice style is eclectic and tailored to meet the client’s presenting needs. I am trained in family therapy and individual therapy and have a unique background in understanding the biology and psychology of mental health needs through my nursing experience, I do not prescribe medications, but can consult with clients about the risks and benefits of a variety of treatment options and assist prescribing providers with therapeutic and side effect management.
One of my great passions is working with children, adolescents, and adults who struggle with ADD/ADHD or Attention Deficit Disorder. So many times with the combination of education, support, parenting skills, school or workplace accomodation, and medication the day to day life of someone who has ADD can be made much more manageable and satisfying. I believe a holistic or well rounded approach is essential to creating the best opportunity for success with ADD.
Another area I am equally passionate about is treatment for PTSD. Trauma can be big "T" Trauma, such as rape, injury, car accident, combat, or a disaster as well as little "t" traumas such as the ones experienced in our day to day lives where we have felt injured, betrayed, or damaged in some way by a person or event. Either type of trauma can have a lasting impact and get in the way of day to day functioning. I am internationally certified as an EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) therapist by EMDR International Association. This type of therapy combines elements of usual talk therapy with eye movements or tapping to relieve reactivity such as anxiety related to fears, trauma, negative beliefs and experiences one may have had. This can be especially helpful with people who experience fear of dental or other procedures or who have had a difficult medical experience or a poor or unexpected outcome to treatment which has caused them emotional distress. It can be helpful for performance, test and social anxiety experiences among many others. I am listed on the EMDR website which you may visit at www.emdr.com and on the EMDRIA international website as a Certified EMDR Therapist which you may visit at www.emdria.org. Both websites have additional information regarding EMDR.
